Kite Flying at Kepong Metropolotan Park

If you are in Klang Valley and have yet to encounter kite flying, take some time off and go for an exciting time with yourfamily to Kepong Metropolitan Park. This park is located at the north of Jinjang and can be easily accessed using MiddleRing Road 2 (MRR2). The first phase of this park was opened in the year 2001 and the second phase is now opened to thepublic with more amenities for the public to use.

This 95 hectares park is a vast area that consists of a 57 hectares lake where anglers will be glad to know that they are allowed to fish here. During the weekends, the huge parking bays are usually taken up and many have to park their vehiclesalong the main road. It is not a good idea to park along the main road as it is illegal and dangerous as there are many oncoming cars driving at quite a high speed. Try to go as early as 3:30pm and you will be able to secure a parking lot. You will see families with young children coming here for a time of relaxation and to unwind the minds. Other facilities that have been built include:

Kite Flying

If you are a kite enthusiasts or has been stirred to take up this hobby, you will be glad to know that there is a huge field that runs parallel to the main road in the park for you to use. Most barriers and trees have been removed to ensurea clearance of at least 100m for the kites to take off. You will see many experience kite flyers here showing their skillsin flying huge kites, some as big as 30 feet.

Other colourful kites with various shapes and design can be seen up the sky during the windy days. If you are driving along the MRR2 towards Sungai Buluh, you will definitely see the many kites and throngs of people at this park especially during the weekends. Buying a kite is not a problem as there are a few kite sellers that ply their trade outside the park.

Istana Budaya

The Istana Budaya or The National Theatre is one of the more established performing arts centre in Malaysia with many outstanding talents which include the National Symphony Orchestra, the National Choir, the National Youth Choir and many popular musicians. There are many shows that are being performed here ranging from the international musicals and concerts to ballet performances.

Established in September 1999, this theatre is located just beside the National Art Gallery along Jalan Tun Razak in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. This state-of-the-art theatre construction started in the year 1995 and completed 3 years later. It was officially opened by former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad.

The Petronas Twin Tower

Petronas Towers construction work began in 1995 and by the time it was completed in 1998, it held the world record as the tallest building in the world until year 2004 when Taipei 101 takes over the record. It has a height of 451.9 m and each tower has a total of 88 floors serviced by 78 high speed elevators. One will be able to observe that the structure is made from steel and glass and is a stark constrast to many other high tower buildings in the city.

The towers are linked to one another through a skybridge on 41st and 42nd floors. The bridge has a height of 170m and a length of 58m. Visitors can visit the skybridge for free by getting the passes which are handed out everyday from 8:30am onwards except on Monday. As the passes are limited and given out on "first come first serve basis", one has to be there early as they will usually run out by noon.

Kinabalu National Park

The Kinabalu National Park is located in Sabah, approximately an hour and a half drive from the city of Kota Kinabalu. Covering an area of 754 square kilometres, the highest mountain in South East Asia called Mount Kinabalu is located here.This granite mountain is 4093 metres above sea level and is the focal point of this park.

  

     If you plan to scale this mountain, be prepared to allocate at least 3 days for this feat. You will spend 2 nights in the mountain huts along the way to the peak. As you scale this mountain, you will see conifer forests, mountain streams, orchidsand ferns. Hear the sound of insects that permeates the calmness and the stillness of the virgin forest. If you arefortunate, you may see and smell the maiden's veil fungus Dictyophora - a delicate plant with foul smelling mucous on theouter surface of its cap.

         Climber's permit is required to climb Mount Kinabalu and can be purchased at Kinabalu Park. Adult fee is RM50 and childrenbelow 18 years is RM20. Make sure you build up your stamina prior to coming here by running, jogging, climbing stairs etc.

Some items you should bring include..

• A pair of jogging or tennis shoes with good grip.
• Warm clothing as the temperature up the mountain could go down to below freezing point.
• Windbreaker, gloves, hat; packed all clothing in plastic bags to prevent them getting wet in the event it rained.
• Torchlight.
• Lightweight Binocular for a good view of the mountain.
• Energy Foodstuff such as chocolate, raisins, nuts, biscuits..
• Drinking water.

The Water Village in Labuan

Kampung Patau-patau II is one of the four water villagr in Labuan. The other three water village are Kampung Patau-patau I, Kampung Bebuloh Laut and Kampung Rancha-rancha Laut. Kampung Patau-patau I is modernised - with concrete walkways instead of plank ones.

Kampung Air Patau Patau 2 comes equipped with water and power supply, telephone and sewage lines, streetlights, water taxi jetty, grocery shops, handicraft shops, clinics, schools and surau (a place of worship for muslims that is smaller than a mosque).  Being surrounded by water, the main mode of transportation is the boat and most of the houses own one. These houses can be rather spacious and well decorated with heavy antiques and every living comfort imaginable on the inside. Staying at this delightful and charming traditional water village is certainly an incomparable experience.
